With the globe on the brink of World War II, Lady Sarah Ashley (Nicole Kidman) travels from Britain to Australia to inspect a cattle ranch she inherited. Reluctantly joining forces with a rugged local known as the Drover (Hugh Jackman), she sets out on a cattle drive across hundreds of miles of harsh terrain to save her ranch. But when they finally reach the town of Darwin, they must contend with the same Japanese bombers that just rained death upon Pearl Harbor.

From its swelling music and luxurious visuals to its romantic archetypes of a rugged cattle man (Hugh Jackman) and a prim English aristocrat (Nicole Kidman), "Australia" feels like a Hollywood epic from a bygone era.
Sure, the stars of this World War II-era film display decidedly 21st century dental work and, um ... skin care ... and the story, at first comforting in its familiarity, eventually becomes too conventional. But for much of its more than 2 1/2- hour length, this sweeping film from Aussie director Baz Luhrmann ("Moulin Rouge!") provides old-fashioned thrills and entertainment. (Full review)
