A scruffy superhero named Hancock (Will Smith) protects the citizens of Los Angeles but leaves horrendous collateral damage in the wake of every well-intentioned feat. That's OK with Hancock; he doesn't care what people think and is just as likely to be found dozing on a park bench as saving a damsel in distress. However, after he saves the life of a PR executive (Jason Bateman) and meets the man's beautiful wife (Charlize Theron), he realizes that he may have a sensitive side after all.

Hancock starts out as one film and morphs into another. First, it's funny and clever--typical action hero film and then shifts into a dark and bloody story line. Why? All performances are solid but the abrupt shift in tone was a mistake. It's as if the director didn't know what film he wanted to make.

The superhero movie "Hancock" should have "bad idea" emblazoned across its chest.
Ill-conceived and oddly executed, this Will Smith vehicle perplexes more often than it entertains.
Part of the problem lies with Smith. Though it's fun to see Mr. Squeaky Clean cut loose as a misunderstood, hard-drinking superhero, Smith relies on the same pained expression whether playing angry or anguished.

The idea sounds ripe: Will Smith, one of the screen's most engaging movie stars, playing a surly wino of a superhero, making a mess of Los Angeles as he comes to the occasional aid of those in need. But not even Smith's charisma can mitigate the chaos that is "Hancock." (Full review)
