For generations a massive generator has sustained the needs of the underground city of Ember. But the generator was built to last only 200 years, and as its lights start to flicker and fade, it remains to two youths, Lina Mayfleet (Saoirse Ronan) and Doon Harrow (Harry Treadaway), to follow a cryptic series of clues that will restore light to to the place.

Set in a 200-year-old underground city endangered by a sputtering generator, "City of Ember" starts out promising and ends up ho-hum.
Centered on two young people seeking a way to save the people of their dying city, this PG-rated film begins with the always-intriguing concept of giving teens adult jobs. Lina (Saoirse Ronan, from "Atonement") and Doon (Harry Treadaway) show up, like the other young people of their rusted-out city, to receive work assignments from the potbellied mayor (Bill Murray).
