Brennan Huff (Will Ferrell) and Dale Doback (John C. Reilly) have one thing in common: they are both lazy, unemployed leeches who still live with their parents. Their insane rivalry and narcissism pull the new family apart, forcing them to work together to reunite their parents.

Will Ferrell's sports comedies have grown thin and wearisome, certainly. But "Blades of Glory" and "Semi-Pro" are richly crafted meditations on the soul compared with "Step Brothers," which lacks even an athletic contest to hang its story on.
Ferrell and "Talladega Nights" cohort John C. Reilly play Brennan and Dale, respectively, middle-age slackers who become roommates when Brennan's mother, Nancy (Mary Steenburgen), marries Dale's father, Robert (Richard Jenkins). That's essentially all there is to "Step Brothers," with a lot of filler in between.
Some of that filler is quite funny, which won't surprise fans of Ferrell, Reilly and their "Talladega Nights" director Adam McKay. Ferrell, Reilly and McKay generated the story for "Step Brothers," and McKay and Ferrell wrote the script.
