2018 California Champions of Mental Health Charity Awards Dinner
On Thursday, November 15, 2018, Mental Health California™ will present an elegant evening of recognition of achievements in mental health and wellness amongst industry leadership in California. An hour-long dinner social will precede the awards ceremony. We will have guest speakers, video presentations, and excellent entertainment throughout the event. Proceeds from the event will support our training, education, and community outreach programs. This year’s honorees are Dr. Richard Pan, State Senator, for the “Legislative Leadership Award”, Dr. Sergio Aguilar-Gaxiola, Founding Director of the UC Davis Center for Reducing Health Disparities for the “Research Award”, and Yvonnia Brown, Director, Behavioral Health and Recovery Services, Merced County, for the “County Behavioral Health Leadership Award”. Guest speakers include Hollywood movie producer and screenwriter Sterling Anderson, Dr. John Boyd, CEO of System Mental Health for Sutter Health, Cassaundra Cochron, Director of the TLCS Triage Navigator Program, and Captain Ernie Daniels (ret.), Chair of the Board of Trustees of Highlands Community Charter School. Performing at this year's event is the legendary "Queen of Funk", Patryce “Choc’Let” Banks, and her band, STR8 Funk, the hottest “funk R&B soul” band in Los Angeles and beyond. Ms. Banks carved her niche as the former female lead singer of the chart-topping “Graham Central Station,” featuring Larry Graham (former bass player for Sly and the Family Stone). Ms. Banks has collaborated with artists such as B.B. King, Stephanie Mills, Chaka Kahn, Wayne Henderson and the Crusaders, and Ronnie Laws, among many others.

Causeway Classic Blood Drive at Sac State
Sacramento State’s University Union will be hosting the 11th annual Causeway Classic Blood Drive taking place Monday October 22 through Wednesday, October 24, 2018. The blood drive will be held in the University Union’s Ballroom from 10am-4pm. This event is co-sponsored by Sac State’s Associated Students, Inc., The Green Army, The Hornet Bookstore, The University Union, The WELL, and its Student Health and Counseling Services. Throughout the blood drive, administrators, faculty, students, and the general public will roll up their sleeves to compete in this annual blood donation competition. The campus as a whole competes against UC Davis, and a trophy will be awarded to the school with the most blood drive participants at the Causeway Classic football game. Student groups on campus are also competing against each other. The group, organization, or department that collects the most blood and has the most participation will win a grand cash prize for their organization. All participants will receive a $10 Fandango gift card and earn MyBloodSource rewards. Faculty and Staff can also take advantage of a “Fast Track” pass to expedite their donation wait. Blood donation are so important to our campus and students. The same blood that is collected from students will help save the lives of accident victims, surgery patients, cancer patients, and many others who suffer from a myriad of diseases. Blood donation is safe, easy, and fun. To become a donor you must weigh 110 pounds or more, be in overall good health, be 17 years of age or older, or 16 with signed Blood Source consent form. Donors can also give at any center or mobile blood drive October 22 to November 9, with code L029 to count towards Sac State. CDA Cares Free Dental Clinic
The California Dental Association Foundation will be hosting a CDA Cares free dental clinic Oct. 26-27 at the Modesto Centre Plaza. Doors open at 5:30 a.m. both days and patients are seen on a first-come, first-served basis with a goal of providing care to about 1,900 people during the two-day clinic. The services offered are limited to extractions, fillings, cleanings, some partial and full dentures, limited root canals, oral health education and assistance in finding a source for future dental care. Uncontrolled blood pressure or diabetes may prevent patients from receiving dental care at the event — please take prescribed medications as directed. Parking for the event is free and no identification is required. Interpreters are available to assist those who do not speak English. The Wellness Fair promotes the 8 dimensions of health and wellness focusing on financial, physical/mental, and spiritual health by offering a wealth of information, education, and fun. The seminars target audience will be generation X, Y, and baby boomers. Childcare and youth activities will be available during the event. The festivities kick off with a parade (Parade Kick-off at 8:00 am). Free activities include awareness & educational information, lifestyle information, free Health screenings, Nutrition consultation, Healthy kids fun zone with free hotdogs, Healthy youth stage, finance workshop, safety promotion programs, along with food demonstration, and ending with a Live concert including a community talent show.
