You've gotta love John Waters. The Baltimore native who made his name initially with gross-out films such as "Pink Flamingos" (starring Divine and doggie doo) made the move to mainstream (more or less) movie-making with such films as "Serial Mom," "Cry-Baby" – and "Hairspray."

Waters' 1988 screenplay for the film "Hairspray" is the inspiration for the upbeat and inspirational musical now playing at Music Circus. Although Waters didn't write the play's book or its music or lyrics – Mark O'Donnell, Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, respectively, did that – his wicked wit and sharp social commentary are at the heart of the piece, which made its Broadway debut in 2003.

Set in 1962, "Hairspray" tells the story of Tracy Turnblad (an indefatigable Joline Mujica), a 16-year-old high school student whose biggest dream is to dance on the local TV dance-party program, "The Corny Collins Show."
