Light Your World

The Sacramento Gay Men's Chorus will kick off its 28th season Friday, Nov. 30, through Sunday, Dec. 2, with a new director at the helm and a new holiday-themed show, "Light Your World."
Performances will be at the following Dates Times:
8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 30
8 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1
4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 2.
All three performances will be held at the First United Methodist Church, 2100 J Street in Sacramento.
Discounted general admission tickets for all performances are $22 in advance and,… Show more if still available, will be $25 at the door.
A reserved seating option for $40 includes a front-of-house reserved seat (no standing in line) and a pre-concert dessert reception at Lumens Light + Living (located one block from the performance venue). The dessert reception, for those holding reserved seating tickets only, begins at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
The following week, the chorus will take the show on the road, with a "Light Your World" reprise performance at 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, at the Central United Methodist Church, 3700 Pacific Avenue in Stockton.
The concert play list will include "A Social Network Christmas," the group's first original number to be jointly commissioned with the Seattle Men's Chorus. The number features hilarious lyrics and choreographed movement and lovingly pokes fun at the world of social media. For the number "How Could Anyone," the entire chorus has learned American Sign Language and will sign the lyrics as they sing. (Professional ASL interpreters will sign at each performance.) The title of the show references the final song in the concert, "Go Light Your World," a moving call for social justice and human kindness.
The "Light Your World" concert will be conducted by the group's new artistic director, Steven Johnson. A pianist, conductor and composer, Johnson also serves as director of Music and Worship at St. John's Lutheran Church in downtown Sacramento. He is a graduate of California State University-Sacramento, where he studied with the late Dr. Frank Wasko and earned a Bachelor's degree in Piano Performance. He also holds a Master's Degree in Choral Conducting from CSUS, where he studied with Dr. Donald Kendrick.
Johnson is passionate about the creative form and function of music and, as artistic director of the Sacramento Gay Men's Chorus, one of his visions is to engage larger segments of the musical community in collaborative concerts and events. "Music in all forms and functions. It all has its place," he says. "The vitality and creativity inherent in the gay community is amazing."
Founded in 1984 as a singing group aimed at fostering a sense of community and provide support for Sacramento area gay and lesbian people, the Sacramento Gay Men's Chorus performs numerous concerts and community benefit appearances each year. Over the past 28 years, the group has become an integral part of the Sacramento arts community as well as a voice for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) equality.
