After-School Teen Empowerment Program.
Building Confidence, Valuable Leadership Skills for Young Women
Our Roots & Wings after-school program offers an opportunity for young women ages 13 to 18 to deepen their connection to the environment, themselves and each other. Through gardening, cooking and eating together, working with medicinal herbs and plants, doing art and exploring the natural world, we will teach valuable life skills while building a supportive community. Through our interactions with the land, we aim to empower young women to build inner strength and confidence as well as learn valuable leadership skills. The program will be flexible and adapted to meet the interests and passions of the group. Held on the Second Wednesday of the month from 3:30 to 5:30 pm at the American River Ranch. There are two sessions with four gatherings each.
Session A: Oct. 9, Nov. 13, Dec. 11, 2019 and Jan. 8, 2020.
Session B: Feb. 12, Mar. 11, Apr. 8 and May 13, 2020.
Price for Session A Or B: $60. Price for both sessions A and B: $99. Scholarships available.

Vermicomposting, the science of composting with worms, is an effective and easy way to put nutrients back into the soil and reduce waste in landfills. In this free class, we'll discuss the basics of how to start and maintain a thriving vermiculture bin. You will learn which foods, types of bins and temperatures that provide an optimum environment for your worms as well as how to use your vermicompost in your containers, gardens, yards, or community green spaces. We've planned an inspiring weekend for you! Come network with like-minded teachers, parents, garden designers, community leaders, school garden coordinators, and others involved in helping kids make the connection between food, health and the environment. This year we will aim to discover ways to increase equity and access through school gardens. Learn and discuss ways to grow culturally representative crops, prepare ethnic recipes using garden produce and design systems that use the naturally diverse and unique learning environment of a school garden. The Art of Cooking Heirloom Beans

Tiger Eye, Peruano, Orca, Anasazi, and Arikara are just a few of the hundreds of heirloom bean varieties. Knowing which beans to pick and how to cook them can make an old bean recipe shine. In this demonstration class, we will explore the myriad types of heirloom beans that are available and learn how to use them in cooking. We will taste a variety of heirlooms and talk about history, flavor, and recipes. Participants will learn how to use heirlooms to dress up baked beans, hummus, soups, and bean dips, and learn new recipes to showcase some of the beautiful varieties available locally. Each participant will make a jar of bean soup to take and cook at home.

Walk along the American River Parkway to discover the native flora and fauna that grow in our own backyard. Spend a peaceful morning by the riverside watching birds, sharing stories, eating fresh fruit from our farm, and learning from the land. This program is designed for youth (ages 5-18) and accompanying adults.
