Originated by coronetist and arranger Bert Barr in 1971, the Uptown Lowdown has performed at every major American Jazz Festival, as well as in Japan, Europe, Canada and Mexico. They also participated in the earliest Sacramento Traditional Jazz Jubilees. This tight-knit group plays the music of America’s jazz greats, Louie Armstrong, King Oliver, Jellyroll Morton, Sidney Bechet, Lu Watters, Turk Murphy and many other jazz and ragtime composers from Harlem, New Orleans, San Francisco and Chicago. Jazz is American folk music and folklore originating inseparably from Afro and Euro-American origins.
